To believe on the Last Day of Judgment is the fundamental aspect of Islam and no Muslim can be a Muslim if he deny in the last day. The verse of the opening chapter makes it very clear that there will be a day when people will be made accountable for their deeds and will be rewarded and punished according to it; as the Holy Quran says in Surah Al Fatiha ملك يوم الدين (The master of the day of Judgment).

The meaning of the word ‘Master’ or ‘ملك’

It means that the ‘Kingship’ will be in the hand of Allah alone. He will be the judge of the judges, king of the kings, powerful of the powerful leaders; as on that day, he will decide about our destiny. Allah alone will carry out the proceeding and those who deny him as being ‘God’ will accept it that day. The Holy Quran says in Surah Ghaifir:

The day when they will be totally visible; nothing from their matters will be hidden from Allah. (Allah will say on that day) for whom is the kingdom this day? (He will respond himself) For Allah, the one, the dominant of all. [40:16]

Calling some Master or associating anyone with this attribute except Allah is indeed a grave sin. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said:

“The person towards whom Allah displays the most anger, and the most despicable on the Day of Resurrection is one who was named king of kings (maliku-l-amlak) for there is no Malik except for Allah.”[Ahmed:7]

Accountability

Those who are saved form the sword of accountability in this life for whatsoever reasons will not be able to find a save hand on that day. It would be a day when nothing can save us except our righteous deeds. So ask yourself this question; despite knowing that whatever we do in this world is being recorded, why aren’t we preparing for that day?

The Holy Quran has revealed several ayahs that describe the horrifying scenes of that day. Those people who have spent their life in the remembrance of Allah and in good deeds will enter Jannah, while those who knowingly ignore the commandments of Allah and have spent their lives in worldly affairs will be sent to hell. The seriousness of accountability can be judged from several verses of the Holy Quran. The accountability of the believers and the hypocrites do differ to a certain extent as mention by the Messenger of Allah (PBUH):

“The believer will be brought close to his Lord until He conceals him and makes him confess his sin. Allaah will say, ‘Do you remember such and such a sin?’ The man will say, ‘Yes, I admit it.’ The Lord will say, ‘I concealed it for you in the world and I forgive you for it today.’ Then He will close up his record of good deeds. As for the others or the Kuffaar, it will be called out before the witnesses, ‘These are the ones who disbelieved in their Lord. The curse of Allaah is upon the wrongdoers.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4408; Muslim, 2768).

If anyone dies in the state of sin, the situation for him on that day and in his grave can be horrifying. But it is Allah who may forgive us or punish. When we say “ملك يوم الدين”, we leave it to him. We cannot judge anyone’s destiny by analyzing his deeds.

People who remain steadfast in the way of Allah and don’t commit shirk will be blessed with the glad tidings of Jannah. They will be the people who face would be glowing out of happiness and they will happily enter their Jannah. No matter how strong or powerful you are in this life, always remember; Allah is the king of the Kings, and there will be a day when he will make us accountable. May Allah help us to stay firm in his path to success, Ameen!
